I’ve been dyeing my clothes for maybe 7 or 8 years now. It’s always been easy things like a yard of felt fabric I couldn’t find in the right shade for my project, or my favorite little white robe that I couldn’t part with…though it wasn’t quite white anymore.
I love that I can just buy a packet of dye from the craft store and change a garment into a bright {I love bright} hue that better suits me {and no longer looked dingy}.
. . Does the thought of that totally frighten you? . .
Well, this was the first time I went for it with an expensive BCBG dress. My favorite dress. Not sure what happened, but it had grey marks ALL over it. Almost like I had gotten into grease at some point and had it cleaned over and over and now the marks were just…a yucky grey. I had thought I’d keep this beauty forever because I loved the lines of it so much. Sigh. Two years didn’t give me enough opportunities to wear it, that’s for sure.
So after debating about it for awhile, I decided…dye it.
I had a few things that I never wore anymore because they’d seen better days, so I did a batch.
This cute top was another favorite for a long time {obviously a long time, look how little my boys are!}.
This is my favorite brand. I typically get iDye at Joann’s but I know it’s sold in most craft stores.
What I like about iDye is that you just toss the packet in your washing machine. You don’t have the scariness of getting the dye all over the kitchen or what you’re currently wearing. Could it possibly be any easier than that?!
Depending on what kind of fabric you’re using, you’ll need to also pour in a cup of salt or some vinegar.
I’d never done anything that I was so nervous about! I so didn’t want to wreck my favorite dress. I’ve never messed up on anything using iDye but I also haven’t done anything that I reeeeeally didn’t want to give to Goodwill. With butterflies in my stomach, I just stood at the washing machine, watching it swirl around & around & around…
After the cycle was over {and an extra rinse}, it was time for a drumroll {and yes, I did eventually walk away}.
What do you think? I really love the hue of the lacy top {cotton always dyes so well} and my dress was kinda cute…but I could still see those grey stains {grrrr!}.
So I tried again. This time I just took the 5 minute drive to Walmart and grabbed a regular packet of dye. The old fashioned kind where you do it yourself.
With this kind I knew I could let it steep for a long time, ensuring a really deep color.
This is a “do what I say…not as I do” kind of moment. What in the WORLD am I doing dyeing my dress bright red/pink with WHITE JEANS and a light colored top on?
Seriously. I’m stupid.
{I prayed a lot the whole time. Shocked God didn’t say, “listen lazy. I’m splashing the whole thing on you for being ridiculous.” Ok, I don’t really think He’d say that…but still.}
Oh also, please please PLEASE don’t dye your clothes in a pot like I did. I now have a one-of-a-kind pink interior All-Clad stock pot. Sigh. I don’t think Ben has noticed yet {shoot. he’s reading this}. Instead use a glass mixing bowl, or even a bucket.
. . . . . . . . . . .
But it was worth it! I am so excited about my “new” dress.
By the way, this is what happens when you hand your child the camera and say, “would you please take a picture of mommy’s dress?” they do just that. They take a picture of your dress…not you. Um, I meant with my face in the picture. So literal, those children!
How fun that a ruined dress can go from this…
to this…!
Ok Benny, grab the keys…you’re takin’ momma out!
{sorry, that was so lame…am I really leaving that in here?}

Great post Teresa! I’ve been wanting to dye something lately, but haven’t done it yet. Maybe I should go pick up some iDye!
I actually bought some ‘rit’ dye a while back, but it is still just sitting waiting to be used. Thanks for sharing your techniques!
Thanks Amy! I’m surprised with all the crafty things you’ve been doing lately {yay for your etsy shop!} that you haven’t dyed anything yet! Totally do it. Just start with something you don’t really care about, just in case. That way you’ll get the butterflies out. xo
Thanks for posting this. Dying clothing really IS scary. I had to chuckle when I saw the title of your post. I figured I was the only one who found it intimidating. Here’s one question I’ve always had… With they dye that you use in the washing machine, (baby steps until I’m brave enough to try the kitchen sink method), do you have to worry about residual dye left behind in the washer? I’m always afraid the next load would come out with purple spots on everything. Thanks again!
Hey Tammy! Haha, I wondered if anyone would chuckle at the title…I did when I typed it. But maybe we’re the only ones who got it ; )
Your question is SO valid. I always always do an extra rinse before taking the garment{s} out of the machine and {I suppose I should have mentioned this in the post} I do another cycle of hot with nothing in it…or just rags or something I don’t really care about. I’ve never had a problem getting any dye on later loads but I think it’s because of my extra 2 cycles.
Go for it! The scariest part is deciding to do it!
Beautiful dye job!
Thanks so much, Jaime! I love love love your blog, by the way. I had found you on Pinterest awhile back. Such fun posts.
Wow! What a great transformation! So happy for you that it worked
I haven’t dyed anything for awhile. I have always used Rit. I like that I can get it in powdered form and I love how their website tells how to mix the colors to get virtually any color under the sun!
ooh I haven’t tried Rit…I love the idea of playing around with tones and shades of colores! I’ll try that next time for sure!
I’m visiting from My Romantic Home, Teresa – and am so glad that you shared this tutorial! I’ve been wanting to dye some linen/cotton pillow slips, bought the Rit Dye to do it…..and then got scared. I’m definitely to take the leap of faith and try it outside in a bucket before the cold weather sets in. Thanks so much for sharing this!
xoxo laurie
thanks so much for checking us out, Laurie! I think the idea of dyeing is so much scarier than just going for it! I’ve not tried Rit before, but I had another comment today and she said she absolutely loves that brand because you can customize the exact color you want, just by going online and using their chart. what a cool idea.
…by the way, I am in love with your blog. Gorgeous! God bless!!
I’ve never used dye on anything! I like the sound of the iDye. I’ll have to write it on my stuff to try list! You make it sound so easy.
Also that dress is seriously cute in pink! Glad you did a second round of dye on it!
Sarah
oh Sarah, go for the iDye! It’s like a brand new garment for $2! I was so nervous when I was doing my dress…excited that it’s actually cuter now then when I bought it!
You took the scary out by taking us on your journey. Great lessons. And the dress looks beautiful.
Thanks so much for linking up at I Gotta Create!

Your dress looks great! I love fabric dyeing. It can be kind of addictive.
I featured you today!

Great post! I have a bunch of clothes that I am thinking about dyeing but I can never get the courage to do it. I’m afraid I will end up with a disaster on my hands. I think I have the courage to try it now
Your dress looks awesome.
I like the color better than the white! It really pops.
thanks Carrie, so do I! …just don’t tell BCBG ; )
love love loooove your blog, btw!
